Beautiful large antique J. Heath Tunstall, Staffordshire, England Platter with “Ontario Lake Scenery” Design. This fabulous transfer-printed earthenware platter was part of a series produced by J. Heath (active 1845-1853) for its Ontario Lake Scenery Series. The Platter is in excellent condition with one minor chip on the front edge and one minor chip on the back edge. No cracks. It was found in the Washington, DC Estate of an Antiques Dealer and Collector. The Platter has several blues and white as part of its color motif. The design includes what looks like a European castle which is in fact Dundurn Castle, in Hamilton, Canada West (Ontario), which at the time was the grandest private home in Canada, belonging to a local politician, Sir Allan MacNab. The Castle was built in 1835 out of stucco-covered brick, and would astonish people for decades to come, most of whom lived in log shacks chopped out of the wilderness. Dundurn stands just above the waters of Lake Ontario. And the Indian tepees Heath shows, were common in the area in those days. The Platter measures 17 1/2” Length x 13 7/8” Width x 1 1/2”Tall. It weighs 74.71 oz or 4 pounds 11 ounces.
