Tonquin is a 1940's Royal Staffordshire translation of a 19th century design by world famous English ceramicist Clarice Cliff. The design has a floral border with trim containing beads and flowers. The center scene is a romanticized oriental landscape with surreal floral components framing the scene.

The Tonquin pattern an be found on an amazing number of items ranging from dinnerware to kitchen accessories to lamps and other decorative items. The main place settings pieces and serving pieces were produced in five main colorways: pink, purple, blue, brown, and brown with multicolored tinting. More rare items are in black or green. Research suggests that Royal Staffordshire and Royal Crownford Tonquin items were produced from the 1940' to the 1960's, followed by Alfred Meakin production of the pattern in the 1970's. Myott items produced on swirled blanks seem to be the most recent issue of the Tonquin pattern, and as such, command lower prices.
